The Sanctuary was built to protect the “Holy House of Nazareth“, where according to the devotional tradition the Virgin Mary received the Annunciation. The tradition says that in 1291 during the Turkish domination throughout Palestine and Nazareth, the angels lifted the house and transported it to Tersatto, part of Fiume town, then close to Ancona, afterwards near Porto Recanati and finally they settled it on Mount Prodo where Loreto raised.

The Black Madonna of Loreto, whose peculiarity is the dark face due to centuries of lamp smoke, is the statue venerated in the Holy House, sculpted by Manrico Marinozzi.
