porto recanati

A privileged destination for relaxing summer holidays, Porto Recanati is a cozy seaside resort where you can breathe a special atmosphere of tranquility, ideal for families and children. It is a quaint fishing town that offers a beautiful seafront, completely closed to traffic, perfect for healthy walks or bike rides through the colorful houses of the village.

The medieval Castello Svevo, built as a defense against pirate attacks and where the entire city life took place, stands in the central square of the town. The large courtyard hosts the arena dedicated to the citizen tenor Beniamino Gigli. In summertime, it becomes the stage of many cultural events. Not far away from the town is an archaeological area that, with its numerous finds, brought to life the ancient Roman city Potentia, testimony of Roman colony origins. Porto Recanati is also known for having welcomed the Holy House of the Madonna in the Scossicci area, during the translations that would then take it to Loreto. In memory of this event, the Banderuola Church was built so that its waving flag would show fishermen and sailors the way from Porto Recanati to the Holy House of Loreto.

festivals and events

Several festivals and traditions in Porto Recanati:
The Sea Feast. It is celebrated at the end of August, near the Patron Feast date, where you can taste delicious fish dishes and local specialties.
The Mid-August Fireworks. A pyrotechnic show on the sea, the most extraordinary event of the summer season that every year enchants more than one hundred thousand spectators.
The Sea Festival. It takes place on the second Sunday of July and it is one of the most characteristic festivals of the city because fishing boats parade on the sea in solemn procession carrying the painting of the Madonna del Soccorso (the Madonna of Rescue), representing Holy Mary with baby Jesus in her arms. According to tradition, the canvas was found in a wooden case at the bottom of a fisherman’s net who was miraculously rescued in a storm.
The Historic Palio of St. John. As part of the Patron Feast, which takes place in the last week of August, this is the most picturesque event. It refers to the tradition of fishing by the ‘sciabbega’, a characteristic working boat used for coastal net fishing. The town districts challenge each other to win the Palio, in a relay race through the streets, carrying two baskets full of fish on their shoulders.
